About Me

School

Hi, I'm Simon Eberhart. I'm a student at Amity Regional High School (class of 2026) and a part-time student at Southern Connecticut State University. At Amity, I'm on the honor roll, and my favorite classes are AP Bio and AP CSA. After school, I take BIO-120 (Microbiology) at SCSU, and I plan on taking more biology classes there over the summer.

Personal

Outside of school, I work on personal engineering projects—I’ve designed everything from custom 3D printing filament to DIY server farms. In college, I really want to study biomechanical engineering to mix my interests in biology and engineering. Some of my goals are to hike the Appalachian Trail and to run a marathon.

Work Experience

Intern at Dragonfly Engineering LLC

June 2024 - August 2024

This was a paid internship. I worked on various projects including reverse-engineering six-axis robot arms from Google X, designing motor brackets for a CNC mill, purchasing inventory from metal suppliers, and repurposing inventory. I learned practical engineering skills such as operating high-precision machinery and following safety procedures.

Counselor in Training at JCC Day Camps

June 2022 - August 2022

As an unpaid volunteer, I supervised a group of 15 twelve-year-olds. Working with co-counselors, I resolved conflicts, guided the kids to their classes, and ensured everyone’s safety. It was a challenging but highly rewarding experience that strengthened my leadership skills.

BuyIn - My Quantitative Analysis Model

In my sophomore year, I became interested in investing and economics. After reading Inside the Black Box, I started developing my own quantitative analysis model. Gradually improving my Python skills, I added features like automatic trading via the Interactive Brokers API and an over-engineered UI. I even built a compute farm with old computers and Raspberry Pis to speed up processing. I made a few hundred bucks using this, and its still a work in progress. Sometime in the future I'll add more modules and try to rewrite parts of it in C to make it more efficient, because Python is somewhat limiting—even with multiprocessing and numpy arrays.

Metal Working

In 2024, I repurposed an old oil drum into a metal melting furnace. With ceramic wool, refractory cement, and a powerful burner, the furnace reached up to 1500°C. I then experimented with aluminum sculptures and custom alloys using a green sand mold and a 3D-printed stencil.

Transmission

In early 2025, I started designing an 8‑axis robot arm using only one motor. The motor drives an 8‑speed transmission, which is operated by 8 electromagnets. This style of robot is unique and much more affordable compared to the standard design with one expensive motor per axis. By using one large motor instead of several smaller ones, I hope that my design will be able to lift 5–7.5 lbs, an amount typically seen only in industrial-grade robots costing upwards of $10,000. I'm not done designing the robot yet, but the transmission and electronics assembly are complete.

Computing For Community

September 2024 - Present

Two friends and I founded a club to develop free websites, apps, and other technology projects for community organizations. We’re currently building a site to track and analyze running data from Strava, comparing user data and suggesting training improvements. Learn more at computingforcommunity.org (I coded it!).

Construction Camp

May 2022 - August 2022

I volunteered at a construction camp where we built an archery pavilion and a rifle range. Under a local contractor’s guidance, I gained valuable teamwork and communication skills while pouring concrete, framing, roofing, and building decks.

Hamden Mobile Food Pantry

January 2024 - March 2024

I volunteered at the Hamden Mobile Food Pantry every Wednesday, and we served around 150 residents weekly. It was a really fun experience and I met a lot of cool people.
